Governer Straits Settlements - In reply to letter of the 14th September last on the subject of Education in the Straits Settlements points out the inapplicability to those settlements of the principle laid down restricting the grant of grants in aid to those Educational Institutions only in which fees are taken from the Scholars- Reports the steps which he has taken for the promotion of Vernacular Education among the Mulays, which he trusts will meet-with approval. Solicits sanction to the outlay of an aggregate sum of Rs. 6600 as grants in aid for the year 1856 to certain Institutions named.
