Extract from a letter from the Agent at Constantinople, dated the 31st March, and received at Porsare on the 2nd May 1800, with respect to public concerns: the Gazette will inform you with the proposals made by Bonaparte to our court and the decision of both houses of Parliament in favor of continuing the war. The same application has been made to the Empire, but as foreign courts are not in the habit of publishing political correspondence, we are ignorant of the failure of Bonaparte’s proposal to that court. Dispatches under the 15th February tell me that the preparations of Austria to continue the war are very great; but at the same time it is to be lamented his Lordship tells me that it was probable, the Russians would return to their own frontiers, although the public papers still continue to state that they were to act very vigorously this campaign. The surrender of Malta has not been confirmed nor is that of Genoa, an event likely soon to take place. This capital has been within these few days under the greatest agitation by the approach of 4000 men under the command of Rouzala bey, within 50 miles of it, meaning to advance still nearer. A considerable body of troops have been sent to disperse these rebels.
