The circular instructions from your Office dated 11 October 1825 discouraging the practice of giving and receiving presents in interviews with native princes and chieftains have been a cause of some embarrassment in the agency, for a direct adherence to them makes these chieftains who have been used to the distinction very averse to meet the agent as they consider a discontinuance of such marks of consideration as they were formerly entitled to, injurious to their consequence in the eyes of their subjects, and in the estimation of neighbouring chieftains.
