In reply to letter no. 17 of the 8th instt. intemates that subcondr whelpadale ws permitted to proceed to the sra cost and australia on medical certificate for 18 month which leave expired on 10th june 1854 the subm conde. was retained on the strenth of the dept for a further period but nothing subseqently having been he4ard to account for his absence .
