Director General - In reply to letter of the 20th Ultimo regarding the balance due by the Indian Post Office to His Majestys Government on account of Steam Postage states that the amount due from the Madras Presidency to the end of December last has already been remitted ,& that the Post Master of each Presidency have been instructed to submit in future to the Accountant and Post Master General a copy of the simple monthly account rendered to the London Post Office and to remit monthly the sum shown by the Accountant to be due on account of latest etc received during the month explains fully his reasons for thinking that it would be but a waste of time and trouble to attempt an elaborate adjustment of the proportion of Steam Postage chargeable to each Presidency.
