With reference to a despatch of the 20th Ultimo, states taht the order of rvolunterring was approved by Govt. in a lr. of the 11th Septr.1844 & that the commr. in chief at the period did not calculate that so many men would volunteer and was therefore disclined to place retrictions respecting the numbers.
