The beginnings of MULK RAJ ANAND's novels were from his stay in the Retreat of Mahatma Gandhi, where he was given the Talisman for cure of agony, and restlessness, in the advice to 'go and help the helpless and agony will go away.' This Talisman in hand, Anand made Pilgrimage of his land from West to South, East and North, and became aware of the miseries and wretchedness beyond wretchedness of his people under alien rule. The first novel Untouchable, written in Gandhi's Retreat was turned down by nineteen publishers for four years, before being published by a small concern, Wishart Books, with a Preface from E.M. Forster, author of Passage to India. The novel was received warmly. And with this began a series of other fiction-fact novels, which recreated the lives of the rejected in slums of Bombay textile mills, in the villages of North India, in mountains and valleys.
