NFIR Demand against handing over of work of loading coal into engine tenders to contractors and abolition of the posts of Coalmen in the Mechanical Department on the Railways-Directive issued to GM Western Railway and copy endorsed to GMs other Railways. to ensure that long periods of departmental handling were not allowed to intervene between the termination of one contract and the award of the next for the same item of work such as coal handling from wagons etc. Railways were further advised that a Bill sponsored by government providing for prohibition of contract working in respect of certain items of the employer's activities had been introduced in Parliament and was presently before a Select Committee and that until the area of such prohibition was defined, it would be implicit to change over the to contract working, any item which had been traditionally handled departmentally.
